Meet Your Hosts: Scott and Karen Brown

Scott and his wife Karen are the 4th generation on 'Grovedale'. Not afraid to challenge tradition, Scott has a history of adapting his business, adjusting from a breeding herd to trade cattle, while the self-replacing Merino enterprise has evolved with a focus on improving reproductive performance. He’s currently running over 4,000 head including Merino sheep and Angus heifers on 772ha.

Scott operates by a simple motto: ‘more testing, less guessing’, and with this concept in mind, has partnered with Atlas Carbon to pursue a soil carbon project. He sees the project's forecasted income as "an extra wool clip every four years," providing an off-farm income stream without leaving the property.

While Scott’s venture to formally improve carbon levels in his soil is new, the roots go back to when he took over from his father and had an aim to move away from set stocking to a more time-based grazing rotation.

“Since experimenting with changes to grazing practices, I can really see how we’re managing grass better after 100 years of set stocking. For example, Phalaris was growing back in paddocks I didn’t realise it had even been planted in, and some native species have also returned” - Scott Brown

Deep Dive with Atlas Carbon Experts: Discover the science behind building soil carbon. Atlas Carbon's specialists will explain how they ground-truth a project's potential by taking soil and pasture samples on-farm.

Data-Driven Decisions: Find out how Scott uses MaiaGrazing to record, plan and forecast his grazing and feed available. This approach helps to him make informed management decisions, in line with his motto of ‘more testing, less guessing’.

Live Soil Sampling Demonstration: Get a close-up look at how we accurately measure soil carbon. You'll see a live demonstration of collecting a soil core to a depth of 1.2 meters, and hear from our experts about the on-farm due diligence Atlas Carbon undertakes to assess a property's soil carbon potential
