Carbon Tax and Its Implications for Your Farm

What is a Carbon Tax?

A carbon tax is a government-imposed fee on the carbon content of fossil fuels, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The tax is levied on businesses and industries based on the amount of carbon dioxide they emit, with the goal of encouraging them to adopt cleaner, more sustainable practices.

The Australian Government repealed its Carbon tax in 2014, choosing instead to pursue climate friendly schemes and incentives to help meet our emissions reductions targets.

Australian landholders, communities and businesses now have the opportunity to participate in the Emissions Reduction Fund.

By running projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere you can earn Australian carbon credit units otherwise referred to as Carbon Credits or ACCU's.

Benefits of Soil Carbon Projects with Atlas Carbon
  • New Revenue Stream from Carbon Credits: By engaging in carbon sequestration and sustainable farming practices, farmers can generate carbon credits that can be sold to offset the costs associated with the carbon tax.
  • Lower Long-Term Operational Costs: Implementing carbon-reducing practices, such as energy-efficient systems and regenerative agriculture, can lead to lower fuel and energy consumption, reducing the overall impact of a carbon tax on farm operations.
  • Access to Carbon Markets: Atlas Carbon helps farmers navigate the carbon tax landscape by enabling them to participate in carbon projects that generate credits. These credits can then be sold, turning regulatory challenges into financial opportunities.
  • Support Sustainable Farming Practices: By adopting practices that reduce emissions, farmers not only comply with carbon tax regulations but also improve the sustainability and health of their land, leading to long-term productivity and resilience.

When we looked at a carbon project we weren’t interested in a sales pitch. We wanted to know what we had to do to maximise this opportunity to build carbon profitably. Atlas Carbon offered us a deep dive into the “how” of a carbon project.
